A Neurologist in the Family

Tonight I went to dinner with my dad and some old family friends. I haven't seen these folks in years, so it was a lot of fun. The friendship between them and my parents is such a unique, fun story. Let me share it.

When my parents were at their very first Air Force duty station in New Mexico, they lived in a cul-de-sac and soon made friends with their neighbors. That was in 1972. When the first couple left the base in 1973, the group decided to meet up again in the summer of 1974. My mother suggested a cottage in North Carolina for a week that summer. They had such a good time that they decided to make it an annual vacation. Every year, since 1974, my parents have vacationed with these other couples. Isn't that astounding? They all have different political views, religions, etc. yet they still have a blast with each other.

They have been to several continents and many phenomenal places. Canada, Scotland, Mexico, Italy, and the Carribean are only a few of the places. This summer they will be going on a river cruise from Prague to Paris. The couples currently live in Nevada, Illinois, Arizona, Texas and Georgia yet they always meet for their summer vacation. We eleven children have joined them a few times on the vacation or at various weddings or celebrations. Even though we're not related, they are like family.

As I was sitting at dinner with three of the four couples who were able to make it to Texas for a surprise party for my mom, I was trying to remember exactly what kind of doctors two of the group were. And, wouldn't you know, one of them is a neurologist! Steve, the neurologist, and his wife are the one couple who didn't make it. He actually specialized in pediatric neurology. Wow. Obviously, 8 months ago, I wouldn't have cared that much, but now? Man, I have so many questions. I can't wait to email him to see if he has any ideas/expertise with APD.  In all my research, I couldn't even get an appointment with a neurologist regarding Jared's disability. Now, i have one "in the family". What a blessing!

I rejoice in your word  like one who discovers a great treasure. Psalm 119:162 (NLT)
