As I mentioned in my previous post, Jared needs cognitive therapy. In essense, his brain needs to learn how to work correctly. Therefore, Dr. Champagne will be meeting with him this summer. She recommends 90 minutes twice a week, so we are going to do that instead of have him work with a teacher at his school. I pray we can make great strides this summer with teaching him phonics at home, along with Dr. C. helping his brain process things.
I am confident that if anyone can help Jared, it's Dr. C. Not only does she have tons of credentials and various doctorates, she also has a Phd in counseling. She believes that changing the way he thinks can help his brain process. APD kids have the tendency to overreact. They are different from kids who don't have a disability, and can "get away with things". Sometimes APD kids feel they are "stuck" and can't communicate their way out of a situation. In addition, negative emotions produce seratonin and dull the memory. She believes that's what Jared is dealing with now. She is using therapy supported by the National Institute for Learning Development. Their website has great information.
As you can imagine, Dr. C's "Academic Achievement Day Camp" is a cost we weren't anticipating. I wish I knew more kids with neuro disabilities, so I could get a discount with referrals. We have asked our families to help contribute to this undertaking and our family members are being very supportive. Praise God!
Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Romans 12:12 (NIV)
I'm so glad that you found Dr C!!
